MBABANE – Eswatini’s sugar industry received a major vote of confidence as global agribusiness giant ABF Sugar strengthened ties with government during a high-level engagement with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade.

The meeting, led by Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo, brought together government officials and ABF Sugar executives currently visiting the country on a working mission. The discussions focused on investment, industrial growth and the future expansion of Eswatini’s sugar sector, one of the country’s leading economic pillars.

ABF Sugar is the parent company of Illovo Sugar Africa, a major producer operating across the continent. Through Ubombo Sugar, the group remains one of the biggest contributors to Eswatini’s agricultural and manufacturing economy. Its operations continue to support thousands of livelihoods directly and indirectly, while strengthening the country’s export capacity in regional and international markets.

During the engagement, Minister Khumalo applauded the company’s continued confidence in Eswatini and acknowledged its contribution to economic development, employment creation and industrial sustainability. He stressed that partnerships between government and investors remained essential in driving inclusive growth and positioning the country as a competitive investment destination.

The minister further reasserted government’s commitment to maintaining a business-friendly environment that encourages expansion and long-term industrial stability. He noted that strategic cooperation with major investors such as ABF Sugar played a critical role in accelerating economic transformation and opening opportunities for emaSwati.

The visit also highlighted the growing importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in building resilient industries capable of competing globally. Stakeholders at the meeting explored ways to strengthen existing operations while unlocking future opportunities within the broader value chain.

As Eswatini continues to pursue economic diversification and sustainable development, the engagement signalled renewed confidence in the country’s investment climate and industrial potential. The sugar sector remains one of the strongest drivers of export earnings and rural economic activity, making continued investment in the industry a significant boost for national growth ambitions.

The discussions are expected to pave the way for stronger cooperation and future initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity, sustainability and long-term economic impact.
