MBABANE – Emaswati students studying abroad have received encouraging news after the Ministry of Labour and Social Security assured Parliament that government-sponsored learners will continue receiving their allowances, despite challenges affecting the current payment system.

The assurance was made during Thursday’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hearing, where Members of Parliament sought clarity on delays related to student allowances and tuition payments for learners pursuing studies outside the country.

Responding to questions from legislators, the Ministry’s Coordinator of Scholarships Management and Testing, Sifisosethu Bhembe, explained that student allowances are prioritised because they directly support learners’ day-to-day welfare, including accommodation, food, transport and other essential expenses.

She noted that while the existing payment system does not allow allowances and tuition fees to be processed simultaneously, the ministry remains committed to ensuring that students receive financial support as promptly as possible.

“Our priority is to make sure students have the resources they need for their daily upkeep while pursuing their studies,” Bhembe told the committee.

The issue was raised by Zombodze Emuva Member of Parliament Ntando Mkhonta, who expressed concern about the impact of payment delays on students living and studying abroad. He stressed that learners should be able to focus fully on their academic responsibilities without worrying about uncertainty surrounding their financial support.

Meanwhile, Ludzeludze MP Nomkhosi Masuku called for continued improvements within the accounts and payment-processing systems to strengthen efficiency and service delivery.

For many emaSwati students overseas, government allowances serve as a vital source of support, helping them meet essential living costs while pursuing qualifications that will ultimately contribute to national development. Delays in payments can place pressure on both students and their families, making reliable and timely disbursements crucial.

The ministry’s commitment is expected to provide reassurance to students and parents alike as Parliament continues to monitor and strengthen systems responsible for managing scholarship and allowance payments.
