MBABANE – The Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening biodiversity conservation by convening a workshop on “Financing Biodiversity Initiatives An Introduction to the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership Matchmaking Mechanism” at Sibane Sami Hotel. The workshop brings together stakeholders from government, local authorities, civil society, academia, the private sector, communities and development partners to explore innovative approaches to financing biodiversity initiatives in Eswatini.
Officially opening the workshop, ENTC Chief Executive Officer and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Focal Point, Mr. Thulani Methula, introduced participants to the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership Matchmaking Mechanism, an initiative designed to connect countries’ biodiversity priorities with relevant technical expertise and financial partners capable of supporting implementation.
Methula said the workshop seeks to increase awareness of opportunities available through the Matchmaking Mechanism, encourage institutions to develop bankable biodiversity project proposals that can attract technical and financial support, and strengthen coordination among sectors implementing biodiversity related initiatives.
He emphasized that biodiversity conservation is a shared responsibility that requires collective action from all sectors of society. He urged government institutions, local authorities, civil society organisations, academic institutions, the private sector, local communities and development partners to build stronger partnerships that deliver measurable and lasting biodiversity outcomes.
According to Methula, the workshop provides an important platform for stakeholders to identify funding opportunities and establish strategic partnerships that support the implementation of Eswatini’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). He stressed that mobilising adequate financial resources remains essential for protecting ecosystems, conserving wildlife and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
The CEO further noted that financing and strategic partnerships are critical to achieving the targets of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which calls on countries to halt and reverse biodiversity loss while promoting sustainable development. He said effective collaboration will enable Eswatini to translate its biodiversity commitments into tangible actions that benefit both people and nature.
He concluded by expressing sincere appreciation to all organisations and development partners supporting biodiversity conservation efforts in Eswatini, reaffirming ENTC’s commitment to working collaboratively in safeguarding the country’s rich natural heritage for present and future generations.
The workshop is expected to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders, improve access to technical and financial support, and accelerate the implementation of biodiversity projects that contribute to environmental sustainability and national development.
