MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III has expressed confidence that newly appointed Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Executive Secretary Dumisani Masilela will make history and leave a legacy that will elevate Eswatini’s name across the region.
Speaking during a media briefing at Ludzidzini Royal Residence after the 9th SACU Heads of State and Government Summit, the King said it was particularly pleasing that a Liswati had been elected to lead the regional customs union, describing the appointment as a moment of national pride.
The King noted that Masilela brings strong experience in public finance and revenue administration, having previously served as the pioneer Commissioner General of the Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS), where he played a key role in strengthening the country’s tax administration systems.
He also brings valuable international experience, having worked as a Technical Assistance Advisor for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., where he supported public financial management and revenue reforms in different jurisdictions, further strengthening his expertise in economic governance.
His Majesty said Masilela is now carrying the hopes and aspirations of the country on the regional stage and expressed confidence that his leadership will be remembered for delivering meaningful progress within SACU.
“We believe he will make history and be remembered in the books of SACU history. When people remember Eswatini, they must remember the good results and achievements realised under his leadership,” said the King.
The King said Masilela’s appointment reflects the confidence that SACU member states have in Eswatini’s leadership and professional expertise, adding that the country is proud to see one of its own entrusted with such an important regional responsibility.
Masilela officially assumed office as SACU Executive Secretary on March 1, 2026, becoming the first Liswati to substantively hold the position.
He has been tasked with driving SACU’s reform agenda, including advancing industrialisation, strengthening regional value chains and implementing the newly approved E5 billion regional innovation funding mechanism.
His Majesty wished Masilela every success in his new role, saying his achievements would not only strengthen SACU but also inspire future generations of emaSwati to serve with excellence on regional and international platforms.
