NKONYENI– Learners at Nkonyeni College have been urged to measure success not by wealth or status, but by the strength of their faith, character and commitment to serving others.
Delivering a motivational address at the college, Minister of Finance Honourable Neal Rijkenberg encouraged learners to build their lives on a firm spiritual foundation, saying a personal relationship with God is the greatest investment they can make for their future.
Rather than focusing on his position in government or the country’s finances, Rijkenberg shared his personal journey, describing how humble beginnings shaped his outlook on life. He told learners that as a young boy, he actively sought opportunities to earn money, experiences that taught him the importance of hard work, perseverance and taking responsibility from an early age.
Using his own life as an example, the minister challenged learners to remain focused on what truly matters. He urged them to “keep the main thing the main thing”, explaining that when God is placed at the centre of one’s life, every other aspect, including education, careers and leadership, is built on a solid and lasting foundation.
Rijkenberg said many people define success through financial achievements, prestigious careers or public recognition. However, he stressed that genuine success is reflected in a person’s character, faithful stewardship and willingness to live according to godly principles.
He encouraged the learners to pursue academic excellence with discipline and integrity, reminding them that knowledge alone is not enough without strong moral values. According to the minister, faith and character are qualities that enable individuals to become responsible leaders capable of making a positive impact in their communities.
Throughout the session, learners listened attentively as Rijkenberg blended personal experiences with lessons on leadership, resilience and purpose, inspiring them to remain steadfast in their values while working towards their dreams.
The visit formed part of Nkonyeni College’s ongoing initiative to expose learners to accomplished leaders whose life stories encourage young people to become responsible citizens and future leaders of Eswatini.
