MANZINI – Despite battling the flu, South African award-winning musician Makhadzi proved that nothing could stand between her and her Eswatini fans as she delivered a thrilling performance at the 10th edition of the Biggest Braai on Saturday night.
Thousands of music lovers braved the freezing winter temperatures to witness one of Africa’s most energetic performers take to the stage, where she lived up to expectations with electrifying dance moves, powerful vocals and back-to-back hit songs. From the moment she stepped onto the stage, the crowd erupted into loud cheers, singing every word and matching her infectious energy.
Speaking in an interview after her performance, Makhadzi revealed that even illness could not stop her from honouring an invitation that held special meaning to her.
“In fact, I had the flu today, but I told my team that my flu couldn’t stop me from coming because of the love I always receive here. The energy from the fans gives me strength. That’s why I enjoy performing my new songs in Eswatini before I officially release them,” she said.
The Number 1 hitmaker described the performance as different from all her previous visits to the Kingdom because it came after receiving an invitation from the Queen Mother.
“No, it’s not my first time performing in Eswatini. It’s just that this performance is very special because I wasn’t just invited—I was invited by the Queen,” she said.
Her appearance quickly turned into one of the night’s biggest highlights as fans danced relentlessly despite the cold weather. The freezing temperatures seemed forgotten as voices echoed across the venue, with supporters singing along to every chorus.
Reflecting on the overwhelming support she continues to receive in the Kingdom, Makhadzi said Eswatini has become more than just another stop on her tour calendar.
“I can honestly say Eswatini is my new home. Every time I come here, whether I perform for one hour or longer, people sing along to my songs. That shows me they’re not just doing me a favour—they genuinely love me. So yes, this is my new home,” she said.
She also praised the atmosphere at the Biggest Braai, saying the crowd’s enthusiasm spoke volumes.
“The vibe is amazing! Even though it’s freezing cold, people are still dancing. That tells you everything about the energy here,” she said.
One of the emotional moments of her visit came when a young fan presented her with a hand-drawn portrait. Makhadzi said the thoughtful gift reminded her how far she has come.
“To be honest, being loved is a beautiful thing. People don’t always realise how much their support means to me. I come from a village, and I had to work hard to build my journey. So when I see people around the world showing me love, I truly appreciate it. Receiving that picture was the cherry on top,” she said.
The singer said actions speak louder than words, adding that seeing fans stand in the cold just to watch her perform was the greatest expression of love she could receive.
“Sometimes love isn’t just about saying, ‘I love you.’ It’s about actions. Seeing people standing here in this cold just to support me shows me how much they care, and I really appreciate that,” she said.
Looking ahead, Makhadzi expressed her desire to return to Eswatini as often as possible.
“My prayer is to come back. If I could come every week, I would really appreciate it!” she said.
Saturday night’s performance once again strengthened the special bond between Makhadzi and her Eswatini supporters. While the flu may have threatened to keep her away, the love of her fans proved stronger, creating another unforgettable Biggest Braai moment that will be remembered long after the music stopped.
