DUMSILE MOTSA BUILDS A LEATHER LEGACY

MBABANE-What began as a simple idea to fill a gap in Eswatini’s fashion market is steadily becoming a vision for a globally recognised African leather brand.

Founder and creator of Melane Leather, Dumsile Motsa, shared her journey from making her first simple leather bag to building a brand rooted in Swazi identity, craftsmanship and the belief that products made in Eswatini can compete on the world stage.

Motsa spoke about her journey Tuesday at the Royal Villas during the IP RUNWAY: THE BUSINESS OF FASHION, FURNITURE & ART, where she also showcased her work, highlighting the importance of protecting and commercialising creativity within Eswatini’s growing creative industry.

Motsa started Melane Leather in 2016 after identifying a gap in the market for authentic, locally made leather bags.

Already passionate about fashion and design, she wanted to create products that were not only fashionable but also connected to Eswatini’s identity and heritage.

“I wanted to create something that was not only beautiful but also connected to our Swazi identity and heritage,” Motsa explained.

Her first bag was far simpler than the products Melane Leather produces today, but it became a turning point in her journey.

She recalls feeling both excited and uncertain as she learnt through trial and error. Turning a piece of leather into a useful and fashionable product with her own hands gave her the confidence to continue developing her craft.

The journey, however, has not been without challenges.

Motsa has faced limited access to machinery, finance, markets, raw materials and production capacity, alongside personal and business setbacks.

Rather than allowing these obstacles to define the business, she sought training, improved her production processes and explored new markets and partnerships.

For Motsa, entrepreneurship has become a lesson in resilience, patience and the courage to start again when things do not go according to plan.

Her designs draw inspiration from Eswatini’s culture, nature, everyday life and heritage, creating a balance between contemporary fashion and African identity.

The uniqueness of Melane Leather lies in its combination of genuine leather craftsmanship, modern design and cultural storytelling.

For Motsa, every product carries more than a price tag.

“When someone buys Melane Leather, I want them to feel that they are carrying a piece of Eswatini with them,” she said.

The brand has already reached customers beyond Eswatini, a milestone Motsa views as evidence that local craftsmanship has value in international markets.

Her ambitions extend even further.

Motsa envisions a modern leather manufacturing factory in Eswatini that will increase production, create employment, develop local skills and produce innovative leather products for local, regional and international markets.

Her ultimate goal is to establish Melane Leather as a leading African leather brand, with a presence in markets including Europe and across Africa.

At the heart of that vision is a simple but powerful belief: a product made in Eswatini can stand proudly on the global stage.
