EZULWINI – The Eswatini Water Services Corporation (EWSC) has installed prepaid smart water metres in about 5 000 homesteads across the country, as the corporation accelerates its transition towards a new way of managing water consumption.
EWSC Senior Manager ICT Innocent Mkhombe said the corporation was making significant progress with the nationwide installation of prepaid smart water metres, with the programme expected to be completed by 2029.
Mkhombe was speaking during the official launch of EWSC’s new campaign, ‘Konkhe ngaWater’, which seeks to encourage responsible and wise use of water.
He said the prepaid programme should not simply be viewed as the replacement of conventional water metres with new devices, but as a fundamental change in how customers manage their water consumption.
“If you look at prepaid, don’t see just a new meter. More look at a new way of managing consumption,” Mkhombe said.
He said installations had already been completed in a number of areas, demonstrating the scale of the rollout.
Among the areas where installations have been undertaken are Mangweni, Tubungu Township, Eveni, Moneni in Manzini, Woodlands, Mmango, Claremont Township, Vanini and Moenyeni, among others.
Mkhombe said the corporation had been busy with installations nationwide and would continue expanding the programme to other communities.
He said customers in Ngwane Park were already aware of ongoing work in the area, as EWSC continues with the transition to the new prepaid system.
The programme is therefore expected to reach more households as the corporation works towards its 2029 nationwide completion target.
The prepaid smart water metres are expected to give customers greater awareness and control over their consumption, while supporting EWSC’s broader efforts to promote responsible water use.
The rollout comes at a time when EWSC is intensifying its message on water conservation through the ‘Konkhe ngaWater’ campaign.
The campaign places emphasis on the need for consumers to use water wisely and recognise that water resources must be protected for future generations.
For EWSC, the prepaid rollout is consequently not merely a technological upgrade. It forms part of a broader shift towards empowering customers to take greater responsibility for how they consume one of the country’s most important resources.
With about 5 000 homesteads already covered and installations continuing in different parts of the country, EWSC is now working towards having the prepaid smart water metre programme completed nationwide by 2029.
