MASUNDVWINI– A strong spirit of gratitude, excitement and cultural pride filled Masundvwini as thousands of young maidens took to the fields to cut reeds, continuing one of the most important stages of the 2026 Umhlanga Reed Dance.
Indvuna Yembali Mpilwende Fakudze expressed heartfelt appreciation to His Majesty King Mswati III for commissioning the young maidens to undertake the reed-cutting exercise at Masundvwini, describing their participation as an important contribution towards preserving Eswatini’s cultural heritage.
For many of the young maidens, the occasion was more than simply cutting reeds. It was an opportunity to participate directly in a tradition that has been passed from one generation to another, while experiencing the unity, discipline and sense of belonging that define Umhlanga.
Fakudze said the commissioning by His Majesty had given the young maidens an opportunity to take their place in the cultural journey of the nation and to better understand the responsibilities associated with participating in the ceremony.
Her message of gratitude reflected the significance attached to ensuring that younger generations are not merely spectators of Eswatini’s traditions, but active participants who learn, experience and eventually carry them forward.
The sight of large groups of maidens moving together at Masundvwini created a vibrant atmosphere, with songs, traditional attire and youthful energy adding colour to the reed-cutting exercise.
The activity forms a central part of Umhlanga, during which maidens collect reeds that are later presented as part of the ceremony. Beyond the physical task, the exercise promotes cooperation, discipline and respect for cultural practices.
This year’s arrangement has given the young maidens their own memorable experience at Masundvwini, while reinforcing the role of Umhlanga in bringing together young women from different communities across the Kingdom.
Fakudze’s appreciation to His Majesty also highlighted the continued support given to the preservation of Eswatini’s traditions and the involvement of younger generations in national cultural activities.
As the 2026 Umhlanga celebrations continue, Masundvwini has become one of the centres of excitement, with the young maidens enthusiastically embracing their responsibilities and creating memories likely to remain with them long after the ceremony.
