LUDZIDZINI – From once marching among the maidens to returning as a mother and entertainer, Eswatini singer and actress Nomzamo “Zaza” Dlamini made a heartfelt return to the Umhlanga Reed Dance, reconnecting with a cultural celebration that holds a special place in her heart.
Zaza was spotted at the Ludzidzini Royal Residence during the Umhlanga 2026 Main Day celebrations, where she reflected on her previous experience at the royal residence as an attendee and shared her excitement at introducing her children to the vibrant cultural occasion.
“The last time I was here, I was an attendee. It was in 2005, if I remember correctly. So I brought my kids so they can be amongst other maidens, and I’m so happy to be here to celebrate the purity and to celebrate culture. Hopefully, I will come back soon,” said Zaza.
Her return to Ludzidzini brought a nostalgic touch to the festivities, as the entertainer found herself experiencing Umhlanga from a different perspective.
Having once participated in the ceremony as Imbali, Zaza’s presence highlighted how the annual celebration can remain a lifelong connection to Eswatini’s cultural identity, even as participants grow older and take on new roles in society.
For the singer and actress, bringing her children was not simply about attending a major cultural event, but about allowing them to experience the traditions, energy and sense of togetherness that define Umhlanga.
The Main Day brought thousands of Imbali to the Ludzidzini Royal Residence, alongside members of the royal family, dignitaries, locals and international visitors who gathered to witness the colourful cultural spectacle.
Zaza’s appearance added an entertainment sparkle to an already vibrant celebration, while her reflections offered a personal reminder of the importance of passing culture from one generation to the next.
As the festivities continued, her message remained clear: Umhlanga is more than a celebration on the calendar – it is a living connection to heritage, identity and community.
