PIGGS PEAK — The Vilakati family has received a helping hand from the Piggs Peak community following a devastating fire that destroyed their home and rental units, leaving them in need of urgent assistance.

Piggs Peak Town Council Mayor Sipho Shongwe handed over relief parcels donated by Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Council itself to the affected family.

The fire reportedly broke out while Police Sergeant **Busta Vilakati** was at the police camp where he resides. He received a call at around 5:30 p.m. informing him that his home was on fire.

Workers from Swaziland Plantations responded to the emergency and attempted to put out the flames. However, their efforts were reportedly hampered by explosions from fridges and Handigas at the property, making it dangerous for them to move closer to the burning structures.

The incident resulted in significant losses for the Vilakati family, including the loss of shelter and property, leaving the family to begin the difficult process of rebuilding.

Speaking during the handover, Mayor Sipho Shongwe called on members of the community, businesses and other stakeholders to support the family as they recover from the tragedy.

“This is a difficult time for the Vilakati family. Losing a home is not something that anyone can easily go through, and as a community we have a responsibility to stand together and support them,” said Shongwe.

The Mayor urged those who are able to assist to contribute essential items, building materials, household necessities or any other form of support that could help the family regain stability.

He further expressed appreciation to Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society and the NDMA for responding to the family’s needs and providing relief assistance.

The Mayor’s appeal comes as the family continues to come to terms with the devastating loss, while the community is encouraged to rally together and help ease the burden.

The incident has once again demonstrated the importance of community solidarity, particularly when families are affected by disasters beyond their control.
