MBABANE– For ambitious emaSwati dreaming of earning a Master’s degree abroad but held back by the high cost of international study, a life-changing opportunity has opened in the United Kingdom.
Eligible emaSwati can now apply for the 2027/28 Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, which provides a fully funded opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies at universities in the United Kingdom.
Applications are currently open and will close on 20 October 2026, giving qualifying candidates just over a month to prepare and submit their applications.
The opportunity was announced by the Ministry of Public Service through the Eswatini Commonwealth Scholarship Agency. Successful applicants are expected to begin their studies in the UK in September or October 2027.
The scholarship could provide a major breakthrough for professionals and graduates who have the academic ability to further their studies internationally but cannot afford the substantial costs associated with studying in the UK.
According to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), the programme covers approved tuition fees while also providing financial assistance that includes return air travel and a living allowance.
This means successful candidates can concentrate on their academic journey without having to shoulder some of the biggest financial burdens associated with international postgraduate education.
Eswatini is among eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries whose citizens can compete for the scholarships.
The programme is specifically intended for candidates who would otherwise struggle to finance postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.
Applicants must seek admission to a full-time taught Master’s programme at a UK university and should be able to demonstrate how their proposed field of study can contribute towards addressing development challenges.
The CSC has placed the scholarships under six broad development themes, covering areas such as science and technology, strengthening health systems, promoting global prosperity, strengthening peace and governance, resilience and crisis response, as well as access, inclusion and opportunity.
Academic performance is also an important requirement.
By September 2027, applicants should normally hold a first degree of at least upper second-class honours level (2:1).
Those with a lower second-class degree may also qualify if they hold a relevant postgraduate qualification, normally a Master’s degree.
Candidates must further demonstrate that they would be unable to afford studying in the United Kingdom without financial assistance from the scholarship.
Beyond earning an internationally recognised qualification, the programme presents successful emaSwati with an opportunity to acquire specialised knowledge, professional exposure and skills that could later contribute to Eswatini’s development.
This is particularly important as the country continues to require highly skilled professionals in areas such as technology, healthcare, governance, economic development and resilience.
The Commonwealth Scholarship programme has a long history of developing professionals across member states.
According to the CSC, more than 30 000 people have benefited from its wider scholarship programme since 1960, creating a global network of graduates and professionals working across different sectors.
In Eswatini, the Ministry of Public Service serves as the country’s national nominating agency for Commonwealth scholarships, while the Human Resource Development Department within the Ministry is listed as the national contact point.
Applications for the 2027/28 academic year opened on 8 September 2026, with the CSC application deadline set for 16:00 BST on 20 October 2026.
Prospective applicants should, however, pay close attention to requirements communicated by the Ministry of Public Service because national nominating agencies are allowed to establish their own application procedures and deadlines alongside those of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
For qualifying emaSwati, the scholarship is more than an opportunity to board a plane and study overseas. It could be the beginning of a new academic and professional chapter — one in which knowledge gained abroad can eventually be brought home to strengthen institutions, communities and national development.
