MANZINI – Behind the machines and specialised equipment at ONCAURA Wellness Centre are patients whose treatment journeys are beginning to provide a glimpse into what locally available cancer care can achieve.

During Health Minister Mduduzi Matsebula’s tour of the facility, Dr Mongeni Dlamini shared treatment outcomes from cancer cases attended to at the wellness centre, including a case involving a patient from the United States.

According to Dr Dlamini, no deaths had been reported among the cancer cases attended to at the centre. He also highlighted the case of a patient from the United States who received cancer treatment at ONCAURA before returning home. The patient was later tested again in the United States, where the results reportedly showed that the patient was cancer-free.

The case stood out during the minister’s visit because the patient had travelled to Eswatini for treatment before having their condition assessed again after returning home. While the outcome was presented by Dr Dlamini during the tour, the information reflects the centre’s own reported patient experience and was not independently verified during the visit.

For patients and families dealing with cancer, treatment outcomes can carry a significance that goes beyond statistics. They can shape decisions about where to seek care and whether specialised treatment is available closer to home. The reported cases also form part of a broader conversation around Eswatini’s capacity to provide specialised cancer services locally.

Matsebula’s visit to ONCAURA focused on the centre’s cancer treatment technology and equipment, with the minister also being taken through the facility’s operations.

For a country where some patients have historically had to look beyond its borders for specialised medical treatment, the outcomes shared during the visit put a human face on the push to strengthen cancer care at home.

And in the case highlighted by Dr Dlamini, that journey stretched from treatment in Eswatini to follow-up testing thousands of kilometres away with the reported result offering a notable outcome for the patient involved.
