JOHANNESBURG– For one unforgettable night, Johannesburg’s iconic FNB Stadium stopped being a football fortress and became the world’s biggest Amapiano dancefloor.
More than 70,000 fans packed “The Calabash” on Saturday as Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa delivered the biggest edition yet of Scorpion Kings Live: A Family Affair, a breathtaking spectacle of music, lights and South African culture that echoed long after the final beat faded.
From the moment the stadium gates opened, supporters poured into the venue draped in streetwear, waving flags and chanting lyrics that have travelled from township streets to clubs across the globe. By sunset, FNB Stadium – Africa’s largest stadium with a football capacity of nearly 95,000 – had transformed into a sea of cellphone lights as fireworks exploded above one of the continent’s most iconic landmarks.
The concert was more than another sold-out show – it was another defining chapter in Amapiano’s remarkable rise from township streets to stadium stages. What began as a local sound has grown into a global movement, and Saturday’s stadium takeover proved the genre now belongs on the world’s biggest platforms.
Adding to the spectacle was an all-star supporting cast featuring heavyweights including Nasty C, Young Stunna, Focalistic, MaWhoo, Daliwonga, Lady Du, Ami Faku, Busiswa, Mr JazziQ and Nkosazana Daughter, turning the event into a full-day celebration of South African music and culture.
The Kings Behind the Movement
The Scorpion Kings are made up of DJ Maphorisa, born Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, and Kabza De Small, born Kabelo Motha – two producers widely credited with shaping and popularising the Amapiano sound that now dominates dancefloors worldwide.
Maphorisa first made his mark producing hits across house, hip-hop and Afropop before becoming one of South Africa’s most sought-after hitmakers, collaborating with international stars including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Drake and Major Lazer.
Kabza De Small earned the nickname “King of Amapiano” for his signature soulful piano melodies and deep production style that helped define the genre’s unmistakable sound.
Together, their Scorpion Kings partnership has produced chart-topping projects including Scorpion Kings, Once Upon a Time in Lockdown and Kings Will Rise, while their live shows have steadily grown from intimate performances to record-breaking stadium productions.
NEXT STOP: ESWATINI
Fresh from filling one of Africa’s biggest stadiums with more than 70,000 voices singing in unison, the Scorpion Kings are now preparing to bring that same championship-winning chemistry to Ocean Summer Vibes on 24 October 2026 at Riders Ranch.
Organised by Sbu The Drum DJ (Sibusiso Dlamini), the festival is already shaping up to be one of Eswatini’s biggest entertainment events of the year, assembling a heavyweight line-up that blends some of Amapiano’s biggest stars with the Kingdom’s own crowd favourites.
Joining Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa on the bill will be host Sbu The Drum DJ, Eswatini’s celebrated DJ Cup( Zama Welcome Maseko) and Uncle Karly, while South African hitmakers BLXCKIE, Thatohatsi, Danya DEVs, Artwork Sounds, Pcee and Kelvin Momo complete a line-up built for an unforgettable night.
The excitement surrounding the upcoming festival was perhaps best captured by organiser Sbu The Drum DJ, who took to Facebook following the Scorpion Kings’ historic stadium show.
“Scorpion Kings, bengishito kekutsi. I said this is the kind of thing that motivates me. One Man Show 2027.”
Dlamini’s message – loosely translated as, “I said this is the kind of thing that motivates me” – reflects the ambition driving one of Eswatini’s biggest music promoters as he looks beyond Ocean Summer Vibes and hints at even bigger dreams for the Kingdom’s entertainment industry.
