MANZINI – Early recognition of childhood cancer and continued support after treatment have emerged as key priorities in supporting children affected by cancer in Eswatini.
Dr Siphile Msane, representing the Deputy Director of Health Services, said timely diagnosis could help with early detection, stressing the importance of recognising cancer signs early and ensuring children receive appropriate care.
She praised children affected by cancer for their courage, resilience and perseverance, saying their experiences continue to inspire the nation. The need for support extends beyond the completion of treatment.
Dr Charity Newton said some survivors may continue to experience physical, emotional, educational and social challenges after treatment, requiring support as they transition back into everyday life.
She said the Foundation wants survivors to receive appropriate follow-up care while also having opportunities to return to school, pursue careers and participate fully in their communities.
Newton also said childhood cancer cannot be addressed by one organisation alone, calling for collaboration among government, healthcare professionals, families, schools, communities, civil society, businesses, donors and development partners.
Her Royal Highness Princess Buhlebetive, representing Her Royal Highness Inkhosikati Make LaNkhambule, encouraged children affected by cancer to remain hopeful.
She described survivors as champions and living testimonies of hope, urging children still undergoing treatment to follow medical advice and draw encouragement from survivors who have faced the disease. She also highlighted the importance of public awareness, early recognition and access to quality care.
The Foundation further recognised parents and caregivers for standing alongside children throughout treatment, while healthcare workers were acknowledged for providing medical and emotional support to families.
The event also remembered children who lost their lives to cancer, honouring their lives while giving encouragement to families who continue to carry their memories.
Newton reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to ensuring children affected by cancer receive support beyond the hospital and have opportunities to build meaningful lives after treatment.
