SIPHOFANENI – Nine Engineers in Action volunteers have been introduced to the Siphofaneni Inkhundla ahead of the construction of the Nkosinathi Suspension Footbridge, which is expected to improve safety and access for residents of KaGamedze and Ngcamphalala Umphakatsi.
The volunteers were introduced through a partnership between the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, through the Microprojects Programme, and Engineers in Action as preparations for construction of the footbridge progress.
The introduction marks an important step towards the commencement of construction works on the project, which is expected to provide residents with a safer and more direct crossing of the river.
Residents have faced longstanding challenges when crossing the river, particularly as the presence of crocodiles has increased safety concerns. The crossing is also used by community members travelling to schools and accessing other essential services.
Siphofaneni Member of Parliament Nomalungelo Simelane said the development was significant for the community, particularly because it would make it safer for schoolchildren to cross the river.
“As a community, this development means a lot to us because it will now be safer for schoolchildren to cross,” Simelane said. She also expressed gratitude to the Microprojects Programme for its continued assistance in supporting development initiatives in the constituency.
The Nkosinathi Suspension Footbridge is expected to address the challenges associated with the current river crossing by providing a dedicated infrastructure solution for residents of the surrounding communities.
The partnership between the Microprojects Programme and Engineers in Action demonstrates the role of collaboration in addressing infrastructure needs in rural communities.
Through the involvement of Engineers in Action volunteers, the project also provides an opportunity for technical support and collaboration with local communities during the construction process.
Once completed, the footbridge is expected to improve daily movement between KaGamedze and Ngcamphalala Umphakatsi and surrounding areas. The project is also expected to enhance the safety of schoolchildren and other residents who cross the river while improving access to schools and essential services.
For the Siphofaneni community, the development represents a response to a practical challenge that has affected movement and safety in the area.
