MALKERNS – Cowboy hats, denim, leather boots and fringe took centre stage at the fifth edition of the Eswatini Farmers Market on Saturday, bringing a piece of Western fashion history into a modern lifestyle setting at Malkerns Country Club.
Thousands of revellers embraced the cowboy theme, turning the venue into a showcase of Western-inspired fashion while adding their own interpretations through colours, accessories and contemporary clothing.
Although the look is now associated with music festivals, celebrities and fashion trends, cowboy clothing originated from practical needs. During the 19th century, cattle workers in the American West needed durable clothes for long days outdoors, horseback riding and handling livestock. Boots, wide-brimmed hats, denim and protective leather garments were shaped by the demands of their work, with Mexican vaquero traditions also influencing cowboy culture.
The transformation from workwear to fashion came as rodeos, films and popular entertainment introduced the cowboy image to wider audiences. Hollywood helped turn practical clothing into a recognisable style, while performers later adopted more elaborate outfits featuring embroidery, fringe and decorative details.
Today, those familiar pieces continue to find space in contemporary wardrobes. Cowboy boots can be paired with dresses or jeans, while hats, oversized belts and Western-inspired shirts allow wearers to reference the traditional look without dressing as working ranchers. The current revival also reflects fashion’s habit of revisiting older styles and adapting them for new audiences.
At the Farmers Market, that evolution was visible in the variety of outfits on display. Some attendees leaned into the traditional cowboy aesthetic, while others blended Western details with personal style and modern comfort.
The event’s theme also showed how fashion can become part of the experience itself. Rather than simply attending for the music, food and stalls, revellers helped shape the atmosphere through their clothing, turning the market into a shared visual celebration.
As cowboy style returns to the spotlight, its appeal lies in that balance between history and reinvention: clothing once designed for demanding work has become a means of self-expression across cultures and generations.
