PIGGS PEAK – Eswatini has taken a significant step towards strengthening its healthcare system with the commencement of specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology under the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ECSACOG) programme in September 2026.
The development marks an important milestone in the country’s efforts to build local specialist medical capacity by enabling doctors to pursue structured postgraduate training while developing their clinical skills within Eswatini’s healthcare environment.
The programme is expected to contribute to the development of qualified specialists who can help address the country’s medical needs and strengthen the delivery of maternal and reproductive healthcare services.
The Taiwan Medical Mission (TMM), which supports medical education, clinical mentorship and capacity building in Eswatini, has welcomed the commencement of the programme, describing it as an important step towards developing sustainable specialist expertise within the local health system.

Dr Kae-Yng Ou, Chief of the Taiwan Medical Mission and a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, and Dr Erastor Ngonyani, ECSACOG Country Representative for Eswatini, ECSACOG Council Member and President of the Association of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Eswatini (AOGE), shared their perspectives on the significance of the initiative.
The introduction of the training pathway provides an opportunity for doctors to acquire specialised knowledge and clinical experience while remaining connected to the local healthcare environment in which they are expected to practise.
Beyond producing specialists, the programme seeks to contribute to the long-term development of the medical profession by preparing doctors to take on additional responsibilities as educators, mentors and future leaders in healthcare.
Building local expertise is particularly important for creating a sustainable health system in which specialist knowledge can be developed, retained and passed on to future generations of medical professionals.
Through its support for medical education and clinical mentorship, the Taiwan Medical Mission has expressed its commitment to initiatives that strengthen Eswatini’s capacity to train healthcare professionals and improve the sustainability of medical services.
The commencement of ECSACOG specialist training therefore represents an important opportunity to advance professional development, strengthen local medical expertise and support the future of specialist healthcare in Eswatini.
As the programme gets underway, its broader significance lies in the potential to develop a new generation of specialists who can contribute to patient care, professional training and leadership within the country’s healthcare system.
