MBABANE – Who is Lady Zee?
She had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand at the recent Scotts Maphuma show that was held at Mdzimba Shisanyama. She is none other than Lady Zee also born Zethu Valentine Dlamini. What captured my attention was seeing her also enjoy her set and her infectious stage presence and command of the turntables. We caught up with the gorgeous DJ to learn more on how she masters the turntables and more about her.
Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from?
I’m from Ezulwini Ebuka, Eswatini, and I’m in my 20s.
When did you fall in love with music and Deejaying?
I first fell in love with being a DJ back in 2019. I started out using my laptop, and later on, I got professional help to learn how to use CDJs.
Who are your musical influences and favourite DJs?
Before I became a DJ, I was a big fan of DJ Zinhle. But as I’ve grown in my craft, I’ve developed a strong admiration for DJ Shimza because of his exceptional skills.
You’ve already shared the stage with many artists and DJs. Do you have any dream collaborations?
I would love to have a one-on-one set with Kabza. I think it would be a beautiful experience and great for my brand.
What are some of your most memorable performances?
I have a few standout performances that come to mind. One was a Halloween event where I was dressed as a soldier, and the crowd really responded well to my set. I also had a memorable performance at the 2023-2024 crossover event at Ocean Cuisine, where I seamlessly transitioned from Amapiano to Afro music to keep the crowd entertained. And I was honored when Oscar Mbo listened to half of my set at Solanis.
Where have you performed before, and where can fans catch you regularly?
I’ve had the opportunity to perform at some great venues and events, like the MTN Bushfire Festival, Epic Gig, Solanis Shisanyama, Mdzimba View Shisanyama, DSTV Eswatini, and even in Mozambique and Pretoria. Fans can catch me every Thursday at Brussels Lounge Manzini for “Bougie Thursdays,” and they can follow me on social media to stay up-to-date on my upcoming performances.
What are your thoughts on DJ fees in Eswatini? Do you think the government should regulate them?
Honestly, I believe DJs in Eswatini are not paid enough. If the fees were regulated, there would be little left for us. I advise aspiring DJs to have a set payment plan and not accept less than a certain amount, especially if they have a strong following. DJs are an essential part of the marketing plan for big shows, and we deserve to be compensated fairly.
Have a certain rule written down and a payment plan that a deejay shouldn’t be paid less than a certain amount. Especially deejays who have an effect and a following because if you look at it the big shows with internationals can never work without locals. We literally are their marketing plan that way we can then have regulated fees but now unfortunately there’s nothing we can offer.
Where can your fans see you next?
Every Thursday they can catch me at Brussels Lounge Manzini for Bougie Thursdays .They can also simply follow me on my socials to keep updated and not regret a good time with me.
