MPAKA – Passionate designer Beketele Dlamini, widely known as “Apparel by Beke,” is set to captivate audiences at the fourth edition of the 2025 Makoti Festival set for 26 April, with her unique blend of African heritage and modern fashion.

At just 28 years old, she has emerged as a prominent figure in Eswatini’s fashion scene.

Hailing from Lubombo, Mpaka, her designs combine modern minimalism with traditional African aesthetics, establishing her as a standout talent. Her fashion journey commenced in 2021 during her tertiary education, and after graduating in 2024, she dedicated herself to her passion full-time.

Growing up in a family of five girls, Dlamini learned early on the value of creativity when her mother, unable to afford store-bought clothes, encouraged her to make her own outfits. “She believed in me before I even knew I had talent,” she recalls, reflecting on her mother’s influence.

At the upcoming festival, she will showcase her latest collection at the Makoti Festival which will be held at Malkerns Country Club.

The festival, dedicated to celebrating the cultural significance of African women, provides an ideal platform for her to connect with her audience. “Makoti Festival uplifts women, and as a female designer, it gives me the chance to connect with my target audience,” she remarks.

Having first attended the festival in 2024, her designs quickly gained media traction, resulting in features in the Sunday Times of Eswatini. This exposure has significantly bolstered her presence in the competitive fashion industry.

Despite her rising success, she faces challenges, including skepticism from potential clients due to her lack of formal training. However, she remains resolute, stating, “I ensure my customers have the best experience, and I equip myself with resilience and unwavering faith.”

Looking ahead, Dlamini dreams of establishing both a physical and online store to make “Apparel by Beke” an internationally recognized brand. “Believe in yourself and trust the process,” she advises aspiring designers.

At the festival , her collection will serve not only as a display of her talents but also as a celebration of African heritage, demonstrating that fashion can be a powerful form of storytelling.
