In the dynamic landscape of Eswatini’s music scene, a young saxophonist is emerging as a powerful force.

Bulelwa Matsebula, at just 25 years old, is captivating audiences and inspiring aspiring musicians across the nation.

Matsebula’s musical journey began in 2017, driven by a profound love for his craft. His early performances were marked by a contagious enthusiasm that resonated with the crowd, creating memorable experiences that left a lasting impact. “I was too excited for my new journey, and the crowd was positive,” he recalls, reflecting on the energy that fueled his initial steps into performing. This excitement has only intensified, allowing him to forge deep connections with those who listen to his music.

Under the guidance of his esteemed mentor, Zwile Bhembe, who is also Eswatini’s very own saxophonist, Matsebula has refined his skills and carved out a distinctive sound that sets him apart from his peers. “I look up to my mentor Zwile; his ability to create unique music that stands out,” he shares. This mentorship has encouraged him to delve into his creativity, challenging the norms of traditional saxophone playing and embracing a unique artistic vision.

Matsebula’s passion for Afro jazz is evident in every performance. He describes the genre as “a rich and diverse genre that continues to inspire musicians around the world.” This appreciation for Afro jazz serves as a foundation for his work, enabling him to weave together traditional rhythms with modern influences. Each show becomes a vibrant celebration of music and culture, showcasing his talent and dedication to the art form.

His growing reputation has already seen him grace some of Eswatini’s most prestigious stages, including the Royal Palace. “I have performed at some of KwaNgwane’s big stages, which also includes the Royal Palace,” he proudly states. Currently, he is in the process of recording his debut album, which will feature ten original songs.

Matsebula’s talent has also taken him beyond the borders of Eswatini, with performances in neighboring countries. “I have also performed at Lesotho and South Africa,” he notes. Performing in diverse settings has not only enhanced his skills but also deepened his appreciation for the universal language of music.

Despite his rising fame, Matsebula recognizes that many people in Eswatini are still unfamiliar with Afro jazz. “Most people are not exposed to this kind of music. I had to continue with my passion and inspire our young leaders,” he explains. His dedication to nurturing the next generation of musicians is evident in his outreach efforts and community engagement.

For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Bulelwa offers sage advice: “Be more focused and dedicated all the time. Practice is the common key to success and improvement every day.” His words resonate with young artists, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with determination and resilience.

Looking ahead, Bulelwa has ambitious plans to elevate Eswatini’s music scene even further. “My future plans are to release more music and to host more jazz festivals in the country,” he shares, envisioning a vibrant platform for local talent to shine. By organizing these events, he hopes to create opportunities for artists to collaborate and showcase their work, enriching the cultural landscape of Eswatini.

Matsebula is not just a saxophonist; he is a symbol of hope and inspiration for young musicians in Eswatini.
