MBABANE — ButterNice Farms, an indigenous-food agribusiness founded by Nozizwe Ginindza, is expanding its 600-chicken Makhaya operation by working with growers across Eswatini to increase supply and help farmers respond to growing market demand, an initiative highlighted during the Khuba Traders and ButterNice Farms Farmers’ Day in Kakholwane.
Ginindza said ButterNice has partnered with other Makhaya chicken growers because individual farmers may not always have the capacity to produce enough chickens to meet larger orders.
“We cannot all produce everything ourselves,” Ginindza said, encouraging farmers to collaborate when demand becomes greater than what one farm can supply.
She said the partnership creates opportunities for farmers to participate at different stages of the Makhaya chicken value chain, including producing day-old chicks, raising growing birds and supplying mature chickens.
Ginindza also encouraged emerging farmers to begin at a manageable scale rather than keeping numbers they cannot afford to feed, protect and manage.
“Start small, learn the business, then grow,” she said.
She said farmers should first understand their production costs, identify their customers and gradually expand as their businesses become more established.
ButterNice also manages laying chickens and monitors egg production, with Ginindza emphasising the importance of adequate feeding and proper management throughout the production cycle.
The collaboration with other growers allows farmers to contribute according to their capacity while collectively strengthening the availability of Makhaya chickens in the market.
Ginindza said opportunities exist across the production chain, meaning farmers do not necessarily have to manage every stage of production themselves to participate in the Makhaya chicken industry.
The model presents collaboration as a way for smaller producers to grow sustainably while contributing to a more reliable supply of Makhaya chickens to consumers.
