MBABANE — In a moment filled with hope and spiritual anticipation, 133 Cardinals from around the world have gathered today, May 7, 2025, in Vatican City to elect the next Roman Catholic Pope. The historic event, known as the Papal Conclave, is unfolding within the sacred walls of the Sistine Chapel.

Among the electors are 18 African Cardinals, proudly representing the continent, including South Africa’s Archbishop Cardinal Brislin of Johannesburg and Archbishop Cardinal Napier of Durban.

This conclave follows the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, at the age of 88. Now, the Cardinals are entrusted with the profound task of selecting the next leader to take up the seat of Simon Peter — a role steeped in faith, love, and service.

As tradition demands, the Cardinals are completely sealed off from the outside world during the voting process. They cast their votes on paper ballots, which are burned after each round. The faithful worldwide watch the chapel chimney: black smoke signals no decision, while white smoke joyfully announces that a new Pope has been chosen.

Speaking from Eswatini, Catholic priest Pastor Ncamiso Vilakati beautifully captured the spirit of the moment. “The New Pope is not just a successor. He is chosen to lead like Simon Peter,” he shared in an interview with EBIS.

Catholics globally are reflecting on the Bible passage from John 21:15–19, where Jesus entrusts Peter with the care of His flock. This scripture inspires confidence that the Holy Spirit will guide the Cardinals’ decision, ensuring the next Pope leads with compassion, humility, and unwavering faith.

Thanks to reforms introduced by Pope John Paul II, the conclave takes place within 15 to 20 days of a Pope’s passing — a lesson learned from a time in 1276 when the Church stood without a Pope for three years.

Now, the world holds its breath, eyes turned to the Vatican chimney, waiting for the white smoke that will herald a new chapter of spiritual leadership and unity for the Catholic Church.
