MBABANE – In an effort to combat the prevalent issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Eswatini, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisile Dladla today (Monday, July 29, 2024) spearheaded the launch of a GBV Activation at the Mbabane Bus Rank.
This initiative, organised by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office (DPMO), in collaboration with development partners, aims to address the escalating cases of GBV in the country under the theme, ‘Let’s End Gender Based Violence in Eswatini: Where are we missing it?’
According to information sourced from DPMO Facebook page during the launch event, the DPM emphasised the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for all individuals, particularly within the public transport sector. She urged bus operators to prioritize the well-being of their customers and refrain from any form of abuse or stigmatisation. Highlighting the concerning statistics, she noted that the Hhohho region currently records the highest number of reported GBV cases in the country.
“I am launching this drive today, and it will extend to other bus ranks across the nation to amplify our message,” stated the Deputy Prime Minister. In a bid to enhance inclusivity, she also announced plans to introduce a basic sign language course for public transport personnel, enabling effective communication with persons with disabilities who are integral stakeholders in the transportation system.
Addressing the effects of GBV, Dladla drew attention to the issue of teenage pregnancy resulting from such violence, often leading to school dropouts. She called upon step-parents to fulfill their parental responsibilities diligently and safeguard the well-being of children in their care.
The event featured Insightful contributions from various speakers, including Sandile Ndzimandze from the DPMO, Kwakha Indvodza Executive Director Sonic Dlamini, Mbabane Mayor Thulani Mkhonto, and representatives from the police force. Participants, including persons with disabilities, commuters, public transport operators, and marshals, engaged in discussions on strategies to combat GBV both at the bus rank and within households.
As the campaign gains momentum, the overarching message of #SayNoToGBV and #everylifematters resonates, underscoring the collective effort required to eradicate gender-based violence and foster a safer society for all. The activation at the Mbabane Bus Rank marks a pivotal step towards raising awareness, promoting dialogue, and instigating tangible actions to combat GBV in Eswatini.
