MBABANE – In a landmark move to drive economic growth, sustainability, and energy resilience, the European Union (EU) has awarded Government of Eswatini a E15 million grant to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This four-year initiative will help smallholder farmers, agribusinesses, and manufacturing businesses integrate renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies, ensuring a more sustainable and profitable future.

The programme, set to run from 2025 to 2028, is spearheaded by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy. Implementation will be carried out by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with funding from the EU, marking a significant step toward green investments and energy security in Eswatini.

Powering Business, Empowering Growth

Small businesses play a critical role in Eswatini’s economy, contributing to job creation, food security, and industrial growth. However, many MSMEs struggle with rising energy costs and limited access to sustainable energy solutions. This grant will provide targeted support to businesses looking to:

✅ Adopt renewable energy for improved operational efficiency.

✅ Enhance energy resilience by reducing reliance on conventional electricity.

✅ Boost profitability through lower energy costs and sustainable production.

Minister of Economic Planning and Development, Hon. Dr. Tambo Gina, emphasized the programme’s transformative potential:

“This grant represents a major step forward in ensuring our businesses remain competitive while embracing the future of renewable energy. Through this initiative, we are empowering entrepreneurs to innovate, expand, and contribute to Eswatini’s economic prosperity.”

International Partnership for a Sustainable Future

The EU, which remains a strong development partner for Eswatini, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable economic growth through this strategic investment. EU Ambassador to Eswatini, His Excellency Mr. Karsten Mecklenburg, highlighted the partnership’s impact:

“Supporting small businesses is vital for Eswatini’s economic resilience. This programme will enable MSMEs to leverage renewable energy technologies, making them more competitive and environmentally sustainable.”

The UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Henrik Franklin, also praised the initiative’s alignment with global sustainability goals:

“This collaboration between the EU, Eswatini’s government, and UNDP reflects our shared vision of inclusive and sustainable development. Access to clean energy will unlock new opportunities for businesses, ensuring long-term economic growth.”

This grant signifies a turning point for Eswatini’s MSMEs, providing them with the tools to thrive in an increasingly energy-conscious and competitive world. With innovation, sustainability, and strategic partnerships at the forefront, Eswatini is poised to become a leader in renewable energy-driven economic development.

“A brighter, greener future for Eswatini’s businesses begins today.”
