MBABANE – The Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU) has received high praise from the Minister of Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, for its initiative to introduce a medicine programme aimed at developing local doctors.
Speaking during a tour of the university on February 19, 2025, alongside parliamentary portfolio committees, Minister Nxumalo emphasized the critical role this programme will play in strengthening Eswatini’s healthcare sector.
Nxumalo acknowledged that EMCU’s commitment to medical education aligns with the country’s long-term vision of producing qualified and competitive doctors. He commended the institution for its proactive efforts in making this programme a reality.
Additionally, he recognized the Eswatini Higher Education Council (ESHEC) for supporting EMCU in obtaining registration and ensuring its programmes contribute to national development.

While applauding EMCU’s progress, Nxumalo urged the university’s leadership to maintain high standards and continuously improve the quality of education. He cautioned against complacency, emphasizing that consistent growth is key to maintaining global competitiveness.
A University’s Vision
Expressing appreciation for government support, EMCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Park, highlighted the significance of training medical students locally, stating that those who study in their home country often become more productive contributors to the healthcare system.

Sithobela MP Mancoba Sihlongonyane also praised EMCU’s contributions, stating that the university has already transformed the lives of many Emaswati by equipping them with professional skills. He commended EMCU for its dedication to academic excellence and community development.
The launch of the medicine programme marks a significant step towards enhancing Eswatini’s healthcare sector, ensuring that future generations of doctors are trained locally to serve their communities effectively.
