MBABANE – Government is planning to table legislation that is meant to remove elderly people and people with disability from poverty.
Unpacking its 2023 to 2028 ‘Nkwe’ Policy Statement today (Tuesday, October 22, 2024), Government has made it clear that it will play a part in enacting legislation that would practically remove elderly people and other vulnerable people away from poverty.
“Government will enact legislation in support of social security for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable populations which will practically and significantly reduce abject poverty,” said part of the statement.
According to the statement, social grants remain a critical catalyst for creating coping mechanisms to the marginalised, elderly, and vulnerable population of Eswatini. It is the commitment of this Government to explore and strengthen social welfare and social security in a meaningful and sustainable manner.
Concerning labour matters, Government is committed to establishing a framework to enable safe and productive export of skill to other countries that ensures maximum benefit of professional staff and their safety. Such a framework should include remittance and build a productive workforce that is focused and unmatched in the country through continuous training and promotion of a positive work culture.
To enable this commitment, the administration will ensure access to scholarships for Emaswati. The efficiency of scholarship administration will be improved and innovative ways developed to ensure sustainability.
