MBABANE – Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Executive Committee member Sandile ‘Beyond 2000’ Zwane has emphasized that the long-term survival of elite football teams depends on the unwavering support of their fans.
According to Zwane, match attendance plays a crucial role in generating revenue for teams, many of which are currently facing financial struggles. He stressed that without consistent fan support, clubs would continue to experience financial hardships, ultimately affecting the growth of football in Eswatini.
“Teams can significantly improve their financial standing if supporters show loyalty by attending matches. Even if you can’t make it to the stadium, you can still support your team by purchasing a ticket—especially now that tickets are available via WhatsApp. Every contribution helps sustain your club financially,” Zwane explained.
Targeting higher attendance
Zwane suggested that if each club could attract at least 1 500 supporters per match, teams would have a steady stream of income to sustain operations and cover essential expenses. He urged fans to recognize their role in the success of their favorite clubs and to take an active part in ensuring their financial stability.
Additionally, he called on supporters to uphold good sportsmanship and avoid violence, warning that unruly behavior could drive away sponsors and potential investors.
“No organization or company wants to be associated with violence,” he said.
“We urge fans to maintain the commendable spirit of non-violence. So far, we are pleased with how supporters have conducted themselves, and we encourage them to continue fostering a positive atmosphere. Whether a team wins, loses, or draws, supporters must accept the outcome with grace, as this is an integral part of football.“
Call for discipline from teams
PLE Chairman Polycarp Dlamini also weighed in, urging players and technical staff to set an example by displaying professionalism both on and off the field.
“It is disappointing to see technical officials and players engaging in unsporting behavior. They must lead by example to promote discipline and fairness in the game,” Dlamini remarked.
With the football season in full swing, Zwane and Dlamini’s calls for increased fan engagement and discipline serve as a crucial reminder that the sustainability of Eswatini’s football clubs relies on collective effort from both supporters and team members.
