MALINDZA – The Eswatini Catholic Church has extended a lifeline to over 1 000 asylum seekers at the Malindza Reception Centre by donating food and clothing worth over E100 000.

This humanitarian gesture, led by Bishop Jose Luis Gerardo Ponce of the Manzini Diocese, underscores the church’s dedication to aiding vulnerable communities during times of crisis.

The donation comes amid a surge of asylum seekers fleeing unrest in Mozambique. In just three weeks, over 1 025 individuals have crossed into Eswatini seeking refuge, placing immense pressure on the resources of the Malindza Reception Centre.

During the handover ceremony, Bishop Ponce expressed the church’s unwavering commitment to helping those in need.

“Our faith compels us to assist those who are in desperate need. By extending our hands and hearts, we hope to ease their suffering and provide them with some semblance of stability,” he said.

The Malindza Reception Centre, which provides shelter, food, and support services, has faced mounting challenges in meeting the growing demands.

Camp Manager Bongekile Mamba expressed gratitude for the church’s intervention.

“This donation comes at a critical time. The increasing number of arrivals has made it difficult to provide for everyone, and the support from the Eswatini Catholic Church is a beacon of hope for these individuals,” she stated.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs have warned that the influx of asylum seekers may continue as the situation in Mozambique remains volatile.

NDMA CEO Victor Mahlalela has called on the public to contribute whatever they can to assist the displaced families.

As the Eswatini Catholic Church takes the lead in addressing this humanitarian crisis, it sets an example for communities and organizations across the country. This act of compassion and solidarity serves as a reminder of the importance of unity in responding to human suffering.

For those interested in contributing to the ongoing efforts, donations can be coordinated through the Malindza Reception Centre or the NDMA. Together, the nation can provide hope and stability to those in desperate need.
