MBABANE – Eswatini’s Under-20 national team has been handed a demanding challenge after being drawn alongside defending champions South Africa, Angola and Lesotho in Group B of the 2026 COSAFA U20 Championship.
The regional youth tournament is scheduled to take place in Mauritius from 18 to 27 September 2026, with the young Sihlangu set to battle for a place in the knockout stages and a chance to strengthen Eswatini’s football development pathway.
The group presents an early test of Eswatini’s ambitions, with South Africa providing the biggest name in the pool. The defending champions will enter the competition with experience and confidence, while Angola and Lesotho will also be competing for progression.
For Eswatini, however, the draw offers more than difficult opposition. It provides an opportunity for the country’s emerging players to measure themselves against some of the region’s strongest young footballers and gain valuable international experience.
The tournament also carries added significance because it is linked to qualification for the 2027 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to be hosted by Ghana.
That pathway gives the competition greater importance for the participating nations, as strong performances could help open the door to the continent’s biggest youth football stage.
Eswatini will therefore need to approach the group with discipline, determination and belief. While South Africa’s presence makes the challenge tougher, the young Sihlangu will know that youth football can produce unexpected results when preparation and teamwork come together.
The COSAFA U20 Championship has traditionally provided a platform for young players to gain exposure before progressing into senior international football. For Eswatini, the September tournament could similarly become an important stepping stone for players hoping to establish themselves at national level.
With the competition only weeks away, attention will now turn to preparations, squad selection and the final build up before the team travels to Mauritius.
The draw may have placed Eswatini in a challenging group, but it has also given the country’s young footballers a stage to show what they can do.
For the young Sihlangu, the message is simple: the road to continental recognition starts in Mauritius.
