ESWATINI’S JSE LISTING SECURES INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

MBABANE – In a historic milestone for Eswatini’s financial sector, the listing of the R4 billion Government of Eswatini Bond on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) has garnered international recognition.

The bond, issued under the Central Bank of Eswatini’s (CBE) “Protea Bond” programme, has been nominated for three prestigious categories at the Global Banking & Markets Africa Awards 2025.

The inaugural issuance of R400 million under this programme, hailed as groundbreaking, has earned a shortlist in the following categories:

  • Sovereign, Supra & Agency Bond Deal of the Year
  • Debut SSA Bond Deal of the Year
  • High Yield Debt Deal of the Year
  • Global Recognition for Financial Innovation

Global Banking and Markets, an esteemed international institution, praised the innovative nature of the bond issuance. The awards aim to highlight the most forward-thinking and impactful deals across sovereign, corporate, and financial institutions worldwide.

John Harrison, Head of Editorial at Global Banking and Markets, emphasized the significance of these awards, stating:

“We are delighted to announce that we will be bringing the industry back together for our Awards, which will be held at the Mount Nelson Hotel, Cape Town, on 26 March 2025.”

Eswatini’s listing on the JSE under the Protea Bond segment—designed for foreign governments issuing South African rand-denominated bonds—has not only raised vital capital for national development but also positioned the country as a credible player in the global capital markets.

Dr. Melvin Khomo, Director of Financial Markets at the CBE, expressed pride in the recognition:
