PIGG’S PEAK – Four teachers at each of Luhlangotsini and Vusweni schools are set to benefit from completed accommodation facilities as the Ministry of Education and Training intensifies efforts to improve infrastructure and create better conditions for teaching and learning.

The developments were reported following assessments conducted by the Ministry, led by Principal Secretary Nanikie Mnisi, as part of efforts to address infrastructure challenges at the two schools.

At Luhlangotsini, potable water is now available, accommodation for four teachers has been completed, while ablution facilities are still under construction.

Vusweni has completed accommodation for four teachers and ablution facilities. However, the school is still awaiting the drilling of a borehole after a water source was identified.

The Ministry is also engaging the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to assist with levelling and dressing sports fields at both schools to meet the requirements of Competency-Based Education (CBE).

The improvements come as the Ministry continues to address requests for additional schools from communities facing challenges accessing education.

During a meeting with a committee led by the Ntfonjeni Member of Parliament (MP), the Ministry also received briefings from the Pigg’s Peak and Motshane MPs regarding requests to open new schools in the upcoming school calendar year.

Some learners reportedly walk more than 10 kilometres daily to reach school, highlighting the need to consider geographical access when planning education infrastructure.

The Ministry’s interventions seek to ensure that schools provide safe and conducive environments for both learners and teachers, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education.

While progress has been made at the two schools, outstanding work, particularly the provision of water at Vusweni and the completion of ablution facilities at Luhlangotsini, remains necessary to ensure that all essential facilities are available.
