MBABANE– When gyms closed and contact sports were banned during the COVID-19 lockdown, Wakhile Mkhwanazi did not just sit still, he got on a bike and found a new calling. What started as a casual way to stay fit during the pandemic has transformed into a full-blown cycling journey, one that now sees him powering through Eswatini’s toughest terrain and eyeing cross country milestones.

His journey into cycling began during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when restrictions on contact sports prompted him to seek a solo fitness alternative. What began as a means to stay active evolved into a passion that now sees him conquering some of the country’s most challenging terrains.

In 2025, Mkhwanazi made his debut in the famous  Border to Border (B2B) Cycling Tour, tackling the 100km stretch from Lukhula to Lavumisa in just four hours, a significant personal record compared to his earlier 60km Road Classic ride in 2022, which took longer. The B2B milestone marked not just an athletic achievement but a demonstration of his discipline and growth in the sport. “This achievement was a personal milestone, showing my dedication and personal progress on the sport”. Said Mkhwanazi.

One of the highlights of his B2B experience was overtaking fellow cyclists despite a late start proof of his enhanced pacing, stamina, and competitive spirit. The event’s international participation also left a mark, as Mkhwanazi appreciated the exposure to diverse cycling cultures and the broader role of cycling in promoting tourism and national unity.

“One of my standout experiences at the B2B was overtaking cyclists who had started earlier as I was late. This was a testament to my improved pacing and endurance.  Additionally, the opportunity to travel different regions of the country provided a unique perspective on the changing landscape and culture.” He stated.

Training regularly along mountainous routes like the Mbabane-Oshoek highway and the demanding Malagwane Hill, Mkhwanazi has embraced the rugged beauty of Eswatini’s terrain. His training grounds provide both physical challenge and scenic reward, shaping his endurance and mental resilience.

“I train on mountaneaos routes that offer both challenge and beauty. My regular routes includes the Mbabane-Oshoek highway extending to the Malagwane Hill, sometimes and back to Mpolonjeni. These terrains provide the elevated distance necessary for rigorous training sessions.” Added Mkhwanazi.

Beyond competitive goals, Mkhwanazi views cycling as a journey of personal development. “Perseverance is key,” he says, urging aspiring cyclists to remain consistent and fully committed to their growth. “I advice aspiring cyclists to dedicate themselves fully for the journey.  Cycling, I believe is more than just a sport but it’s an adventure that offers personal growth and deeper connection to one’s surrounding.” He emphasized.

With his sights now set on completing a 240km cross-country tour in 2026, Mkhwanazi continues to push boundaries one kilometer at a time.
