MBABANE – Eswatini’s commitment to modernising its transport network has taken a giant leap forward.
Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg recently unveiled plans for an ambitious road infrastructure project funded by the African Development Bank.

“This project covers over 100 kilometres of high-quality tarred roads,” Rijkenberg announced. “It will connect Siphofaneni to Maloma, Big Bend, Nsoko, and finally Sihlutse to Lavumisa. It’s a transformative network for the Lubombo and Shiselweni regions.”

The new roads are expected to drive economic growth and boost connectivity. “It’s not just about smoother travel,” the Minister said. “It’s about enabling farmers to get their produce to market faster, making it easier for children to reach schools, and linking communities like never before.”

According to Rijkenberg, the road project will help bridge rural-urban gaps and create new opportunities for trade and commerce. The Minister was optimistic about its impact, noting that, “When you improve roads, you improve lives. It’s that simple.”

The roads will be built to international standards, ensuring durability and safety. “We’re committed to investing in infrastructure that lasts and supports our economy,” Rijkenberg said. This is in line with the government’s broader vision of using infrastructure as a catalyst for inclusive growth.

This project also highlights the country’s prudent borrowing approach. “We’re using loans for projects that will grow the economy and repay themselves over time,” the Minister added.
As bulldozers prepare to roll out, the message is clear: Eswatini is building roads, and with them, a brighter, more connected future.
