MALKERNS – A dream come true!
Winning a competition like the MTN Bushfire is no small feat. It provides a significant opportunity for local artists to showcase their talent within Eswatini’s vibrant music scene. The pressure is immense, and the competition is fierce. Many artists pour their hearts and souls into their performances, hoping to gain recognition for their hard work and passion. Winning this competition means sharing the stage with international artists who have made history. The MTN Bushfire Festival, known as the biggest festival in Eswatini, attracts audiences from around the world, creating a platform for local talent to shine.
We had the honor of speaking with Hapkoo, the winner of the MTN Bushfire Firefly music prestigious competition which was held on Thursday (24 April 2025), who is an Afro soul and trap singer from Mbekelweni (Boyane). At just 25 years old, Hapkoo born Temangcamane Prudence Maseko has already made a name for herself in the music scene.
Reflecting on her achievement, she shared, “I still feel like I am dreaming honestly; saying I am super-excited still doesn’t feel enough. The feeling of happiness is beyond my control! I owe me and my team a hug. This is a moment I will never forget. I am proud!”
Hapkoo described the challenges of competing: “All I wanted was to give it all as much as I can and not forget my roots. I was so scared, but my family, fans, and friends gave me the strength to fight. They believed in me, and my aim was to do my best. Thus, I believe my people gave me the fighting spirit! It was a tough competition, but I understood my assignment.”
As the first performer of the night, she faced her nerves head-on: “I was so nervous at first, especially because I was the first to perform. It was really hard thinking of how the crowd would react. But when I got on stage, I had fun! I told myself that this is the moment I and my team have been working for, and we served.”
The competition was intense, with numerous talented artists ready to give their all. “Being announced the winner was a blast! I couldn’t believe it, but deep down I knew I deserved it. I worked hard, I worked very hard! I held my tears back just after my name was called out… All thanks to God.”
Hapkoo expressed immense gratitude for the support she received: “To all those who voted for me, guys, God bless you! The level of support was beyond my imagination. I couldn’t have made it without you guys. You are amazing, and I promise you more! Please make sure you buy your Bushfire ticket!”
Looking forward, Hapkoo is excited about preparing for the MTN Bushfire Festival: “I am so excited to prepare myself for such a bigger stage. This is a dream come true! Eswatini should be very proud!” She promises her fans an unforgettable performance filled with creativity, uniqueness, and stage presence. “Actually, I am coming with more fire! What I served on the Firefly stage was just a taste of it! Ya’ll do not want to miss this year’s Bushfire.”
Hapkoo takes a moment to acknowledge her supporters: “First of all, I would like to thank my producer TN$ Savvy. He has always been very supportive. As much as we were in business, he never stopped encouraging and making me believe in the music I am doing. Working with such a person is the best.”
She extends her gratitude to her family, friends, and dancers: “All thanks to my family and friends. I know they’ve always been supportive, but this time, the support was at 100%. I wouldn’t have done it without my dancers, Khaya Ngwenya, Extra Kid, Palesa Simelane, and Phephile. You are the best!”
As Hapkoo prepares for the Bushfire Festival, she carries the hopes of many young artists in Eswatini. Her journey is a testament to what can be achieved with hard work, determination, and the support of a loving community. We can’t wait to see what she brings to the stage next!
