MBABANE – In the rural village of Dlangeni, Nompumelelo Temangwane Khanyile is a shining example of hard work and determination. Growing up in a family where her mother was the breadwinner, Nompumelelo learned the importance of helping provide for her family. From a young age, she understood that her skills could play an important role in putting food on the table.
In 2016, Nompumelelo was inspired by a community program led by Inkhosikati laMbikiza, which provided materials for local women to create beautiful beaded items, known as emgcebesha. Watching these women earn money for their work motivated her to learn beading herself. “If they can do it, so can I,” she said.
When Nompumelelo started university in 2019, she had to put her beading business on hold. Life at school was challenging, but she refused to give up. After some time, she returned to beading, realizing how important it was for her financial stability. She worked hard to balance her studies and her craft. “I had to manage my time well, I spent weekends and late nights working on pieces to make money for food and rent, especially during times when school allowances were delayed,” she said.
There were moments when she struggled to afford materials for her work. However, Nompumelelo found ways to overcome these challenges, with mobile money, she was able to buy materials on credit.
With dedication and creativity, it is possible to overcome obstacles. She not only creates beautiful pieces of art but also supports her family and inspires others to follow their dreams, no matter the difficulties they face.
