HISTORIC WATER COOPERATION AGREEMENT SIGNED TO STRENGTHEN REGIONAL SUSTAINABILITY

MBABANE – In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable water management and regional cooperation, the Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA).

This landmark agreement is set to enhance water resource management and sustainability across the Inkomati, Mlumati, and Maputo river basins, benefiting Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa.

The MOU signifies a strategic partnership between the two organizations to improve collaboration, share expertise, and develop joint projects of common interest. This cooperation will reinforce the principles of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) while ensuring the sustainable utilization of these vital transboundary water resources.

A Partnership for Progress

The agreement aims to address key water-related challenges in areas such as agriculture, groundwater exploration, hydrology, climate change, water monitoring, and hydropower development. Recognizing the importance of effective water governance, INMACOM and KOBWA will work together to implement solutions that enhance both environmental sustainability and economic growth.

The MOU outlines five key objectives:

  • Shared Projects – Collaborative initiatives that leverage the strengths of both organizations to enhance water security.
  • Skills Development – Knowledge exchange through training programs and capacity-building efforts.
  • Resource Mobilization – Identifying funding opportunities and forging new partnerships to support joint projects.
  • Improved Sustainability – Developing water management strategies that prioritize conservation and efficient use of resources.
  • Climate Adaptation – Assessing the effects of climate change on water availability and implementing measures to mitigate risks.

A Step Towards Sustainable Water Management

This agreement marks a major milestone in regional water governance, ensuring that Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa remain committed to equitable and sustainable water use. The collaboration will be regularly reviewed to ensure its effectiveness in serving the needs of all stakeholders while safeguarding the interests of the Member States responsible for approving activities within the Inkomati and Maputo River Basins.
