DUBAI, UAE – Trailblazing Information Communications and Technology Minister Savannah Maziya again raised the country’s flag when elected Chairperson of the Global Council on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, at the ongoing World Governments Summit here in Dubai on Wednesday.

Her election will see the minister and her council championing issues around Gender Equality around the globe.

His Majesty the King delivered a keynote address in one of the sessions of the World Governments Summit being held here in Dubai which saw over 6 000 participants and over 30 Heads of States and government.

The ICT’s minister star continues to shine, having been awarded the prestigious Lifetime Awards for Africa economy Builders Forum & Awards in Ivory Coast in July.

Speaking after her election the minister said war and economic disparity, affect women even more.

“We are innocent bystanders in most of these atrocities. We are unequal in places of work and in our homes which seems to get more unequal every single day,” she said.

Maziya said it is time they play an active role in being part of the solutions by ensuring that effective execution of the SDGs not only benefits the world but women and families.

She said it remains their request to have women included in the finding of solutions in the execution of SDGs, adding that this would not only create fairness, dignity and opportunities for women but a more peaceful and caring world.

“As we gather to share this practices through collaborations, let us create a new kind of leadership that is fully inclusive, eliminating all discriminations and ensure that women play have a role in all the demographics.

“Please work with us to elevate our position in the world. Issues of sexual violence and domestic violence must be abolished. Equal pay for equal work must be a norm. Access to financial products and fair lending practices are critical. Access to education that is equal should be a right for women,” Maziya said.

The minister said if they are to lead with character and integrity, and being civil human beings they are bound by duty to involve women in all parts of the SDGs as this would vastly increase the success of the SDGs from the current 17 per cent if women are involved.
