MANZINI – Heritage is not only found in ceremonies and history books. Sometimes, it is in the food on a plate, the clothes people wear, the songs they sing and the stories they carry with them.
That is the spirit behind the IDM Student Representative Council’s Culture Day, which takes place today at the IDM Sports Hall, bringing students together for an afternoon built around food, music, traditional expression and entertainment.
Coming just a day after Heritage Day, the gathering offers students an opportunity to engage with culture in a setting that feels less like a formal lesson and more like a shared experience.
Traditional food will form part of the programme, alongside cultural presentations and performances. The line-up also brings together young entertainers and personalities including Lelo the Predator, DJ Bunny, Cy Ndukwe…nyama and Nurse Wekhantri, adding a contemporary touch to an event centred on cultural identity.
One of the interesting things about a campus culture day is the way it puts different generations of cultural expression in the same space. Traditional attire and food can sit alongside modern music and youth entertainment without one necessarily replacing the other.
For students, that creates room to enjoy where they come from while also expressing culture in a way that feels relevant to their generation.
The timing also gives the event a wider significance. With Heritage Day having placed culture and identity in focus, the IDM gathering continues that conversation among young people the generation that will ultimately carry many of those traditions forward.
Rather than treating heritage as something that belongs only to the past, the day presents it as something that can still be tasted, heard, worn, performed and enjoyed.
And perhaps that is what makes a campus culture day interesting: it is not simply about looking back. It is about seeing what happens when heritage meets the people who are shaping its next chapter.
