LOBAMBA – His Majesty King Mswati III has announced a series of infrastructure projects set to drive Eswatini’s economic transformation, including the construction of roads, dams, and energy facilities.

During his speech at the official opening of the 2nd Session of the 12th Parliament, the King emphasized the need for investment in national infrastructure to support sustainable development and improve citizens’ livelihoods.

One of the largest projects in the pipeline is the Mpaka Dam, a multi-billion Emalangeni development expected to enhance water security and boost agricultural productivity. The dam is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure year-round access to water for farming communities.

Additionally, government is prioritizing road infrastructure, with major upgrades planned for key highways in Lubombo and Shiselweni. These projects will improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and reduce transport costs for businesses and individuals.

A significant announcement was the planned construction of a new Parliament building, which the King stated is long overdue. “Our current Parliament has served us well, but it is time to build a modern facility that meets today’s needs,” he said.

To ensure meaningful participation in these projects, local contractors will be given priority in government tenders, allowing the people and the economy to benefit from these developments. The King urged authorities to maximize local participation and ensure the new infrastructure leads to long-term economic growth.

Another major initiative is the launch of Eswatini’s Strategic Oil Reserve, set to be completed by April. This project will enhance the country’s energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

The King’s speech underscored Eswatini’s commitment to transforming its economic landscape through targeted infrastructure investments. These projects, if executed effectively, will not only create employment but also lay the foundation for long-term prosperity.
