MBABANE- Thousands of runners filled Somhlolo National Stadium with energy and color this morning, marking another inspiring chapter in the story of the Imbube Marathon, Eswatini’s signature celebration of unity, endurance, and healthy living.
Speaking through HRH Princess Tiyandza, His Majesty King Mswati III applauded the participants for turning the event into a true symbol of national pride and resilience.
“The Imbube Marathon is more than just a race,” said the King. “It is a movement that promotes wellness, inclusivity, and national pride. Every step taken today represents progress for the runners, for our communities, and for the Kingdom as a whole.”
His Majesty noted the marathon’s growth since its inception in 2016, evolving from just over 2 700 runners to nearly 7 000 participants this year. He praised its role in strengthening community bonds and advancing Eswatini’s vision for a healthy, united nation.
The King also welcomed the return of the race to its Saturday slot, saying it allows participants more time to rest and enjoy Eswatini’s natural beauty. Beyond the race itself, he highlighted the marathon’s positive ripple effects on tourism, local business, and community upliftment.
A heartfelt mention went to the 3.3km charity run, which saw families, the elderly, and people living with disabilities joining in. His Majesty described it as “a reflection of Eswatini’s caring and inclusive spirit.”
The event’s international appeal was also celebrated, with runners from the United States, Belgium, Australia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, the DRC, Morocco, and South Africa joining their Eswatini counterparts, a testament to growing regional unity and cooperation through sport.
His Majesty extended his gratitude to the marathon’s partners and sponsors, especially Standard Bank Eswatini, which has supported the event for seven consecutive years with annual contributions exceeding E350 000.
First announced by His Majesty in 2015, the Imbube Marathon continues to embody the Kingdom’s values of strength, wellness, and solidarity, bringing together people from all walks of life under the banner of progress and pride.
