MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III has extended his congratulations to the Republic of India on the occasion of its National Day, celebrated annually on January 26. Known formally as Republic Day, this event marks the adoption of India’s Constitution and its transition into a republic in 1950.

On behalf of His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, the Government, and the people of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Prime Minister Russell Dlamini conveyed heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Government and its citizens.

“India’s remarkable journey as a vibrant democracy continues to inspire the world. We deeply value the strong and multifaceted partnership that exists between Eswatini and India,” Prime Minister Dlamini remarked. He expressed wishes for enduring peace, prosperity, and success for the Government and people of India.

Republic Day holds immense significance for India, commemorating the nation’s independence from British rule and its establishment as a sovereign republic. The Constitution of India, adopted on November 26, 1949, came into effect on January 26, 1950, replacing the Government of India Act 1935. The date was selected to honor the 1930 proclamation of Purna Swaraj (complete independence) by the Indian National Congress.

The celebration of Republic Day is marked by parades, cultural events, and public ceremonies reflecting India’s rich history and traditions. It is one of the three national holidays in India, alongside Independence Day (August 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2).

India’s diversity also leads to various regional festivals and holidays, many of which are declared at the state or union territory level. National holidays such as Republic Day unify the country in a shared celebration of its democratic heritage.
