MBABANE – The Maguga Dam and its surrounding areas witnessed a significant cleanup campaign, drawing in enthusiastic participation from the youth and key community leaders from the Nkomazi area.

The event, organised by Yibutse Green Action, with support of the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) and the Eswatini Environment Authority (EEA) and the community authorities.

The clean up campaign was aimed to address the increasing pollution and promote a healthier environment for both residents of Nkomazi and wildlife.

KOBWA Communications Officer Phumzile Hlatshwayo highlighted the pressing health hazards posed by the pollution.

“The accumulation of waste not only affects the aesthetic value of our natural resources but poses severe health risks to the community. Contaminated water can lead to diseases, and the debris endangers the wildlife residing in the dam, disrupting their natural habitat and leading to a decline in biodiversity,” said Hlatshwayo.

Armstrong Sibandze from the EEA emphasised the legal implications of illegal dumping.

“Engaging in illegal dumping is not just irresponsible; it is against the law. Those caught can face heavy penalties, including fines and imprisonment. Illegal dumping severely damages the Environment, killing plants and animals and contaminating our water sources. It’s a serious offense that requires serious action,” Sibandze asserted.

Yibutse Green Action Executive Director Musa Ndlangamandla praised the youth and community efforts.

“This initiative is a testament to the power of community and youth action in tackling climate change. Beyond environmental benefits, such campaigns create employment opportunities for young people, fostering a sense of responsibility and providing valuable experience in environmental stewardship,” Ndlangamandla remarked. Volunteers from various constituencies joined the Yibutse team, showcasing a strong community spirit and a shared commitment to preserving their environment.

Local residents expressed their gratitude and support for the initiative.
“Seeing our young people take such an active role in cleaning up the dam is inspiring. It gives us hope for a cleaner, healthier future for our children,” Musa Dlamini, a resident commented.

Thabiso Mavuso, a resident of Gangakhulu added: “This campaign has brought us together as a community. We are more aware of the impact of our actions on the environment and are committed to maintaining this cleanliness. It’s vital that we ensure water Animals can live side by side with us. Healthy ecosystems contribute to our own health and well-being, providing clean water and a balanced environment.”

The cleanup of Maguga Dam stands as a significant step towards sustainable environmental Management. It highlights the importance of community involvement and strict enforcement of environmental laws in safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
