MBABANE – The Mbabane Alliance Church launched its Elderly Fellowship in Selection Park, Sandla, focusing on addressing critical issues affecting senior citizens, particularly in the realms of mental health and dietary concerns.
The event, which was launched on February 23, 2025, gathered religious leaders, health professionals, and community members to discuss the need for structured support systems for the elderly.
Key Challenges Identified
Sindiso Bhembe, a speaker at the event, highlighted several significant challenges faced by the elderly:
– Family Dynamics: Many seniors experience role reversals, where their adult children take on caregiving roles, leading to potential conflicts and financial dependency.
– Physical Health Issues: Common chronic illnesses such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease were discussed, alongside mobility issues and sensory declines.
– Mental Health Struggles: Depression and anxiety were noted as prevalent issues, often exacerbated by social isolation, grief, and declining health. Cognitive decline, including dementia, was also emphasized as a growing concern.
Dietary Concerns Addressed
Dietitian Thandi Kunene-Mazibuko addressed the dietary needs of seniors:
– Excess Sugar Consumption: She highlighted that many elderly individuals consume high-sugar foods, including 100% fruit juice, which can be misleadingly perceived as healthy.
– Dietary Recommendations: Kunene-Mazibuko advised seniors to:
– Increase their intake of meat and vegetables.
– Reduce consumption of fruit juices, starchy foods, and sugary products.
These dietary adjustments are crucial for managing chronic illnesses and improving overall health.
Community Support and Future Initiatives
Lutfo Dlamini, Chairperson of the Philani Maswati Charity Organisation, commended the church for its initiative, describing aging as a blessing. He noted that:
– The Elderly Fellowship would alleviate the burden on organizations supporting the elderly.
– He stressed the importance of tolerance, love, and understanding in marriage and family relationships to foster stable households.
The event concluded with a call for increased community involvement in supporting the elderly. Church leaders expressed their commitment to maintaining the Elderly Fellowship through:
– Regular gatherings
– Health workshops
– Faith-based programs
These efforts aim to ensure that senior citizens remain engaged, valued, and supported within both the church and the broader community.
