PIGG’S PEAK— Mhlatane High School’s AS Level learners are proving that education goes beyond books and classrooms, using their first year in the programme to serve the community and make a meaningful difference in Pigg’s Peak.
The school’s AS Level class has embarked on a Social Responsibility Programme that has seen learners actively engaging with communities and responding to social challenges affecting vulnerable groups.
In collaboration with the Pigg’s Peak Town Council, the learners participated in a clean-up campaign across Ward 5, supported by hostel students and teachers. The initiative was aimed at promoting environmental responsibility while giving learners an opportunity to contribute towards creating a cleaner, healthier community.
The programme also extended its support to the Malandalahle Community Centre on 27 March 2026, following concerns over child neglect and challenges faced by elderly people within the community.
With assistance from the Pigg’s Peak Town Council, the learners visited the centre as part of their efforts to reach out to vulnerable members of society and better understand some of the social challenges affecting people around them.
Earlier, on 17 March 2026, the AS Level learners worked with the school’s psychosocial support group to assist underprivileged learners.
As part of the initiative, they provided self-care packs containing essential hygiene products for both girls and boys. They also introduced the AS Level service group to the wider student body, helping to promote a culture of compassion and service within the school.
The programme reflects Mhlatane High School’s vision of preparing learners not only to achieve academically but also to become responsible young people equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.
The school currently has 13 AS Level learners studying subjects that include English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and Accounting.
Speaking about the initiative, Project Coordinator Thokozane Tsabedze said the programme was designed to help learners understand that they have an important role to play in addressing challenges within their communities.
“The programme gives our learners an opportunity to put their education into action by serving others, caring for their environment and supporting members of the community who need assistance. We want them to understand that leadership is not only about academic achievement, but also about responsibility, compassion and making a positive difference,” said Tsabedze.
Through these activities, Mhlatane High School’s AS Level learners are demonstrating the important contribution young people can make towards community development.
Their efforts are also strengthening the relationship between the school and the wider Pigg’s Peak community while nurturing a culture of volunteerism, leadership and social responsibility among learners.
For the young participants, the programme is becoming an important extension of their education—one that allows them to learn through practical experience and understand the value of giving back.
