MBABANE – Responding to the growing influx of refugees at the Malindza Refugee Camp, Health Minister Mduduzi Matsebula has deployed a specialized team of front-line responders to address the humanitarian needs.
A statement from the Ministry of Health confirmed that Minister Matsebula dispatched the NKWE! AVoHC_SURGE Eswatini Team, a group of highly trained multidisciplinary officers. The team’s expertise includes case management, infection prevention and control (IPC), surveillance, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as risk communication and community engagement (RCCE).
Currently stationed at the Malindza Refugee Reception Centre, the team is working in collaboration with health workers and other response teams from various sectors. Among their tasks are conducting health screenings to identify potential illnesses and ensuring continuity of care for refugees who may have left behind critical medication during their escape.
The refugees at Malindza Camp predominantly hail from Mozambique, fleeing political instability following the country’s October 9, 2024, national elections. The unrest arose after Daniel Chapo, representing the ruling FRELIMO party, was declared the winner with 70.67% of the national vote. Independent candidate Venancio Mondlane and RENAMO opposition leader Ossufo Momade garnered 20.32% and 5.81% of the votes, respectively.
Chapo’s victory, and his impending inauguration on January 15, 2024, succeeding President Felipe Nyusi, sparked allegations of electoral fraud. Tensions escalated into violence, leaving over 100 people dead as opposition supporters protested and armed confrontations erupted.
The Ministry of Health’s initiative is part of broader efforts to provide critical support to those affected by these developments, ensuring safety and care for the displaced.
