LOBAMBA– Minister of Education Owen Nxumalo formally apologised to the House of Assembly on Thursday, October 9, 2025, for the highly publicised dispute with Ministry of Education Principal Secretary (PS) Nanikie Mnisi.
The apology was made during the Second Quarter Performance debate of the Education Ministry, which was conducted by Members of Parliament (MPs) serving on the Ministry of Education Portfolio Committee. Minister Nxumalo addressed the House, offering apologies to Speaker Jabulani Mabuza, Deputy Speaker Madala Mhlanga, and all MPs for the incident that had attracted public attention.
Speaking before the House, Nxumalo emphasised his commitment to good governance and effective leadership, noting that these principles could only be upheld through cooperation and dialogue rather than personal conflicts. He acknowledged that disagreements can arise, but insisted that leaders must model constructive resolution.
“For me, dialogue is key when differences arise,” the Minister said. “It was my duty to ensure that the disagreement with PS Mnisi was resolved, and I am pleased to report that we are now on good terms.”
In a light-hearted moment during his submission, Nxumalo joked that he and the PS were now “one,” eliciting laughter and applause from MPs in attendance. The minister highlighted that their reconciliation reflects a spirit of unity and professionalism within the Ministry of Education, reinforcing the importance of maintaining harmonious working relationships for the benefit of the education sector.
Minister Nxumalo’s public apology is seen as an effort to restore confidence in the leadership of the Ministry and demonstrate accountability to the legislature. It also underscores the emphasis placed by Eswatini’s government on resolving internal conflicts promptly and professionally to ensure continuity in public service delivery.
The reconciliation between the Minister and PS Mnisi is expected to strengthen collaboration within the Ministry of Education, supporting ongoing initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes and implementing government policies effectively.
