ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – Moses Vilakati was officially sworn in today as the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE), marking a historic milestone for Eswatini.
His election makes him the first Liswati to hold such a high-ranking position within the AU.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Vilakati pledged to advance sustainable agricultural practices, food security, and climate resilience across the continent. His leadership is expected to drive transformative policies that enhance rural development and the responsible management of Africa’s natural resources.
Vilakati, who previously served as Eswatini’s Minister of Agriculture and later as Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, brings decades of experience in policy formulation and implementation in agriculture and environmental conservation. His tenure in Eswatini saw groundbreaking reforms in food security, ecotourism, and sustainable development.
Speaking after the ceremony, Vilakati expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and committed to working with all African nations to ensure long-term environmental and economic sustainability.
The African Union has hailed his election as a step towards strengthening Africa’s agricultural and environmental policies in alignment with Agenda 2063, the continent’s blueprint for socio-economic transformation.
