MBANGWENI – Maidens from Mpumalanga, South Africa, have returned to Eswatini for the 2026 Umhlanga Reed Dance, marking their 13th consecutive year of participating in the national cultural ceremony.
Mpumalanga Imbali joined thousands of local maidens at Mbangweni Royal Residence in the Shiselweni Region for the second leg of Umhlanga, continuing a tradition that has strengthened cultural ties between communities on both sides of the border.
This continued participation highlights the enduring cultural connections shared by Eswatini and neighbouring communities in Mpumalanga, with the annual journey providing an opportunity for the maidens to take part in one of Eswatini’s most significant cultural events.
Their return shows the consistency with which the group has maintained its involvement in Umhlanga. The maidens participated alongside their counterparts from different parts of Eswatini, adding a cross-border dimension to this year’s ceremony at Mbangweni.
