MBABANE — “My passion for radio grew from understanding its power to influence.”

These words were shared by Thuthukani “Thuthu” Maziya (25), a talented radio host at Eswatini Broadcasting Information Services (EBIS2). Born in Mbabane and originally from Siteki, Thuthukani has brought fresh energy to the airwaves.

Currently, he hosts the Wake Up Call breakfast show on EBIS2, airing from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM every day. Thuthukani opened up about his journey into broadcasting, sharing the story behind his passion.

When Did You Join the Radio Station?
“I joined the radio industry in 2022 and became part of EBIS2 in June 2023. My passion for radio and the media industry grew from a deep understanding of its power to influence and engage audiences, particularly the youth. I have always aimed to represent young people and address issues that resonate with them.”

Did You Always Want to Be in Broadcasting?
“Originally, my first love was visual editing. I worked at CFS Media BW as a project manager and editor. However, over time, my passion shifted toward radio. To be honest, I never imagined becoming a radio presenter or broadcaster, but once I ventured into the field, I quickly found my way. I attribute my ability to navigate the space to the influence of my father, Vukani Maziya, who started his career in radio and later became the CEO of Eswatini TV. He left big shoes for me to fill, and his legacy continues to inspire me.”

“Before stepping into broadcasting, I was active in public speaking, including being an MC for corporate events and representing my tertiary institution at international research conferences. During this time, I met an amazing woman, Kelly Ramputswa, the former station manager of Yarona FM and current manager at UB FM. She played a significant role in shaping my professionalism and guiding me as I entered the industry.”

Did You Study Broadcasting?
“I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Media Studies, which covers Communication, Public Relations, Broadcasting, and Visual Editing. I completed it at the University of Botswana in May 2024.”

What Feedback Do You Get from Listeners?
“The reception to my work has been overwhelmingly positive. I value constructive criticism and use it to continually grow and improve my craft.”

Besides Radio, What Else Are You Passionate About?
“Outside of radio, I am a deep house DJ and a firm believer in health and fitness. While I try to stay fit, my busy schedule requires me to manage my priorities carefully to maintain a balance.”

Who Would You Love to Interview on Air?
“An artist I’d love to interview internationally is Oscar MBO. His meticulous attention to detail and ability to produce standout deep house hits in a highly competitive industry inspire me. I also admire his unique sense of style, which adds to his presence.”

What Would You Advise Aspiring Radio Broadcasters?
“To aspiring broadcasters, be one with information—whether it’s reading books, exploring social media, or networking with others. Stay observant, refine your skills, and remember that broadcasting is a craft that requires constant improvement.”

Where Do You See Yourself in the Near Future?
“Looking ahead, in the next five years, I see myself expanding my presence in the broadcasting industry, perhaps as a leading voice on a national or even international platform. I want to grow my influence, host impactful shows, and further connect with and inspire young audiences. Ultimately, I hope to be recognized not just for my work on air but for contributing meaningfully to the media landscape and advocating for issues that matter to my generation.”
